Casual Portraits
Often called engagement portraits, as session of romantic casual portraits is included at no extra charge. This session is done weeks or months prior to your wedding. If you have a favorite spot, we can go there. If not, I know of some delightful places. This session allows us the chance to get to know each other a little bit better so that by the day of the wedding you'll be working with an old friend! Many couples like to lead off or end their albums with a selection from this session. This extra portrait session is included in the basic wedding creation fee.

Bridal Portraiture
We offer a formal bridal studio portrait session scheduled in advance of the wedding day. Scheduling this session in advance allows more time on the wedding day to capture all of the emotion special to that day. A somewhat "fussier" session than anything else we do, separating it from the rest of our wedding coverage allows us the luxury of time to tend to all that details that will show both the bride and the gown to best advantage. Scheduled long enough in advance, there will be time to prepare a wall portrait that can be displayed at the reception. There is no extra charge for the formal bridal session.

Planning and Flow
We'll work with you to plan your coverage so that you get exactly what you want. We'll be happy to share ways to achive a smooth rhythm and flow so that your wedding will be just as you dreamed.

Professionalism
Your wedding will be beautifully photographed without turning it into a media event. We're very much aware of the dichotomy created by a desire to preserve this once-in-a-lifetime event on one hand and the serious religious aspect of the ceremony on the other. We work every hard to provide the photographs you want without disturbing the ceremony or your guests.

Extra Touches
We work as a team to help keep things organized and running smoothly. This includes everything from sorting out bouquets and boutonnieres to making an emergency sewing repair. The more we can smooth the day for you, the better our photographs will be, and that means greater pleasure for you in the finished work!

Your Wedding Budget

The term "wedding budget" almost seems like an oxymoron these days, but the truth is that everyone is cost conscious. The trick to pulling off a wedding without breaking the bank lies in planning and creative compromise.

First, identify the aspects of the event that are most important to you. A large guest list, an open bar, or a live band point you down one path. A small, intimate gathering with recorded music suggests another route.

A smaller wedding can be just as memorable and enjoyable as a large one--sometimes more so. The time of year can affect the cost. Many items are negotiable in the slower months. Don't expect to cut deals in the busy season!

Alcohol can be a major expense. You can cut costs in several ways. You can cut it out entirely, reduce the variety offered or limit the time in which the bar is open. A combination open/cash bar is also a possibility.

A buffet usually costs more per person than a sit-down meal. A reception held at a restaurant at a normally closed time, such as a Saturday afternoon, usually represents an extremely good value compared to a hotel or catering hall.

Your florist can work with you to maximize savings potential. Consider the number of people who need flowers. Having bouquets for all of the aunts and grandmothers is a nice touch, but not a mandatory requirement. Consider also the type of flowers and size of the arrangements.

Music is a festive lubricant for a reception. If you want a variety of music--something quiet during the meal, dance music laer--a good DJ can provide good value. Another option would be the "one man band." Keyboard artists are able to create a variety of musical styles and moods without the expense of a full band. You may also want to consider hiring high school music students. Woodwinds and strings can create a relaxed, yet sophisticated atmosphere.

In all cases make your choices based on the value received rather than bottom line price. This is particularly true of your photographer. Examine the work of photographers in various price ranges. Once you understand what value each price range represents, you can make an informed choice. Keep in mind that your photographerh as the responsibility of preseving your memories. Pick someone with whom you feel confidant.

If, after examining the market, you feel that you can't afford the photographer you want, consider a compromise. Have that photographer create a beautiful bridal portrait or portraits, then trust the wedding day photography to your friends and relatives. You may find that this combination will suit your needs and budget.

Portraiture at Les Henig Photography
A portrait session at Les Henig Photography is not just a simple documentation of a face. We want to record the inner you; to show something of your personality. Whether we’re creating a simple head and shoulders business portrait, a family grouping or a child’s portrait, we want to see who you really are.

We also want to create a portrait that’s well suited for its intended use. Just as a close-up business portrait would look odd in a large wall-sized print, a scenic family grouping would also seem out of place as a desk sized print. Knowing how the portrait will be displayed will help guide the planning process.

Think about where in your home your portrait will be displayed. Portraits displayed in more formal spaces are more effective when such portraits are more formal in style and clothing. Portraits to be displayed in more casual areas, on the other hand, will be better if the clothing and relationships within the portrait are more casual.

A planning meeting will cover clothing, location and best time for your portrait. While some sessions are best done in the studio, we’ve found that in many cases people are more relaxed in the familiar surrounding of their home or a favorite outdoor location.

We want to create a portrait that doesn’t immediately date itself based on clothing styles, so we encourage you to carefully consider the choices of colors and styles of clothes that participants will wear.

Bar/Bat Mitzvahs

For decades, metropolitan Washington’s couples have trusted us to cover their weddings. Not too many years later they came back to have us photograph their children’s milestone events. Just as they sent their friends to us for wedding photography, they continue to refer us for bar and bat mitzvahs.

Our coverage of bar and bat mitzvahs includes a casual portrait session of the child, traditional bimah portraits and full candid coverage of the reception. Our coverage flexes to fit the specific needs of families and the traditions of various congregations.

Just like our weddings, coverage of these milestone events is designed to be complete, yet discrete. We get everything without being “in your face” the entire day.

Fine Art

So what do we do when we’re not creating portraits, covering weddings or doing other commissioned work? We’re out wandering the woods or the back roads looking for visually interesting subjects that stimulate our senses, excite our imagination, renew our love of photography and rejuvenate our spirit. It may be a flower blossom covered in morning dew, a wild mushroom on a wooded path or the rusted remnants of man’s impact on the land. Going to new and different locations is always exciting, but favorite images have also been created within steps of the back door. In order to be consistently creative for clients, we have to first be creative for ourselves.
